Naturopathic Medicine and Obamacare

You and your family may now have health insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or Obamacare, but if this health insurance doesn't cover naturopathic care, it may not seem to be of much use to you. What you may not know is that excluding the services of naturopathic doctors, or NDs, from your coverage is not permissible under the ACA.

On its website, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, or AANP, says: "Section 2706 of the ACA states that health insurance plans cannot discriminate among services provided by licensed health care professionals. However, many states are neither observing nor enforcing this provision — and others are interpreting it to mean that ND services can be covered out-of-network rather than in-network."

The AANP has started a grassroots campaign to help patients speak up for their right to have naturopathic care covered by their health insurance plan. Go to to learn more, and to sign a petition that will be sent to Governor Kitzhaber. It's something simple and effective you can do to make sure your naturopathic visits will be covered in the future.
